Narratives, Accounts, and Reports

Narratives

  • Narratives can be personal or fictional. Ensure your story has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
  • Setting the scene is essential. Use descriptive language to bring the story to life.
  • Develop your characters well. Describe their physical attributes, personality traits, and behaviours in the narrative.
  • Dialogues can make your narrative more realistic. Make sure you use quotation marks. Use colloquial language where appropriate to express natural conversations.
  • Keep the past, present, and future tenses clear to allow your reader to follow the chronology of the events.

Accounts

  • An account is typically a first-hand experience or depiction of an event. Ensure your account is coherent and detailed.
  • Start with an introduction that provides a brief overview of the event you are describing.
  • Describe the event in chronological order. Useful phrases could be ‘Pada awalnya’ (At first), ‘Kemudian’ (Then), and ‘Akhirnya’ (Finally).
  • Highlight the significance of the event, how it affected you or those around you.

Reports

  • Reports are formal and objective; ensure that you stick to the facts and avoid personal opinions.
  • Structure your report with separate sections or paragraphs for each point or area of discussion.
  • Headings and subheadings are very helpful in organising your content and directing the reader’s attention.
  • Start with an introduction that gives a brief outline of what the report is about.
  • Include a conclusion or summary at the end to reinforce the primary points or findings.
  • Use precise and concise language. Remember to apply formal Indonesian language rules.
