Conversations, Interviews or Narratives
Understanding Conversations, Interviews or Narratives
- Cultivate a habit of listening to colloquial Indonesian regularly. This can help to recognise phrases and expressions from conversational Indonesian.
- When listening to a narrative or dialogue, try to identify major shifts in topic or mood. These are often indicated by words and phrases that introduce a new idea or emotional tone.
- Comprehend the need for contextual understanding. This means understanding the conversation, interview or narrative not just at the word or sentence level, but also in terms of its overall context.
Techniques for Improving Listening Skills
- Practice active listening. This means giving your full attention to the audio clip, and not just hearing, but actively trying to understand what’s being communicated.
- Regularly expose yourself to audio and video resources in Indonesian, such as podcasts, news broadcasts, music, and films. This will help you get used to different accents, speeds, and styles of speech.
- Pause and replay difficult sections of the audio material. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t understand everything the first time you hear it.
- Use the written transcripts where available, particularly for more challenging audio content or to check your comprehension.
Responding Accurately
- Learn key expressions and phrases that are commonly used in interviews and narratives. For example, expressions of agreement, disagreement, surprise, happiness, etc.
- In an interview setting, pay extra attention to the questions being asked. Make sure you understand them well, as your answer should be relevant to these questions.
- Practise summarising the main points of a dialogue or narrative in your own words. This is a crucial skill for accurately responding to questions about what you’ve listened to.
- If you don’t understand a word or phrase, don’t panic. Instead, try to infer its meaning from the context in which it’s used.
- Be aware that there can be cultural references in the material which may need a broader understanding of Indonesian culture and society.
