Explanatory and Argumentative Pieces
Explanatory and Argumentative Pieces
Explanatory Pieces
- Explanatory pieces, or penjelasan, aim to clarify, educate or instruct on a particular subject.
- Set the scene by introducing what the topic is and why it’s important. Using phrases such as ‘arti penting dari’ (the important meaning of), can help establish context.
- Break down the topic into manageable chunks, or sections, each dealing with a separate aspect of the topic. Use subheadings to guide the reader.
- Use clear and appropriate language to explain complex ideas. Use examples or analogies to clarify your points.
- Ensure that your explanations are cohesive and logically sequenced; your reader should not get lost along the way.
- Incorporate transitional words and phrases such as ‘sebelumnya’ (previously), ‘berikutnya’ (next), and ‘sebagai hasil’ (as a result) to aid in the flow of your writing.
- Conclude your explanatory piece by summarising the main points you’ve discussed.
Argumentative Pieces
- Argumentative writing, or argumen, put forth a position on a topic and provide reasons to support it.
- Clearly state your thesis or claim at the very beginning. For instance, phrases like ‘Saya percaya bahwa’ (I believe that) can help you establish your standpoint.
- Each paragraph should present a separate point of argument, supported by evidence or examples. Use phrases such as ‘Untuk ilustrasi’ (For illustration) to introduce your evidence.
- Counter arguments can be included to show an understanding of differing views. Use ‘Meskipun begitu’, (Even so,) to introduce the counter arguments.
- Use logical reasoning, facts, statistics, expert quotes and other persuasive methods to convince the reader of your standpoint.
- End with a strong conclusion that reaffirms your initial thesis and summarises your key arguments.
