Throughout history, societal norms and values have continually shifted, leading to transformations in gender roles and expectations. This has had significant impacts on religious attitudes and doctrines relating to gender.
Rapid social changes in the 20th and 21st centuries, including industrialization, urbanisation, and globalisation, have brought about dramatic changes in the way societies perceive and experience gender.

Feminism and Religious Traditions

Feminism is a socio-political movement advocating for gender equality that has challenged and changed many longstanding views and practises related to gender within religious traditions.
Many feminists have critiqued religious traditions as being patriarchal, arguing they have often systematically disadvantaged women. This criticism often revolves around the roles and rights of women within religious communities, the portrayal of women in sacred texts, and the predominance of male leadership within religious institutions.

While some religious institutions have remained resistant to changing gender norms, others have embraced them and adapted their doctrines and practises. This is reflected in the changing leadership roles within certain religious communities.
For example, many Christian churches now ordain women as priests and bishops, a practise that was unthinkable in many places even a few decades ago. Similarly, in some branches of Judaism, women can now become rabbis.

Many religious communities and organisations have had to grapple with new gender equality laws that prohibit discrimination based on gender.
This has created tension in some religious communities where traditional beliefs and practises may conflict with modern legal and societal norms.

The increased recognition and acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities has led to changing views about gender within many religious communities.
Many religious institutions have grappled with how to respond to these societal changes. Some have condemned LGBTQ+ rights and identities as contradictory to their beliefs, whereas others have embraced a more inclusive stance.

Advances in science and technology have also forced religious communities to reconsider traditional beliefs about gender. For instance, reproductive technologies have challenged traditional views about women’s roles as mothers, while developments in understanding of genetics have raised questions about binary views of gender.
