Feeding Equipment for Babies (0-12 Months)

  • Feeding babies during the first year of life requires several specialised tools. The choice of these tools often depends on whether the baby is breastfed, bottle-fed or has already started on solids.

Breastfeeding Equipment

  • Breast Pump: Can be used to express milk if a mother is unable to breastfeed directly. They can be manual or electric.
  • Breast Pads: Absorbent pads that help prevent milk from leaking through clothes.
  • Nursing Bras: Provide support and make breastfeeding more convenient.
  • Nursing Pillow: Helps support the baby during feeding and can ease strain on the mother’s back and arms.

Bottle-feeding Equipment

  • Bottles: Babies can be fed with a variety of bottles including standard ones, angle-neck bottles, and vented bottles that aim to reduce gas.
  • Teats: Different flow rates are available to match the baby’s sucking strength. These can be changed as the baby grows.
  • Bottle Steriliser: Used to clean bottles and eliminate germs. They can be microwave or electric steam sterilisers.
  • Bottle Brush: Helps clean bottles and teats before sterilisation.
  • Bottle Warmer: Warms the milk to body temperature.

Equipment for Introduction to Solids

  • High Chair: Provides a secure and comfortable environment for the baby to eat. Can be standalone or clip to a dining chair.
  • Plastic Bowls and Spoons: Used for feeding. Plastic is used due to its durability and safety.
  • Baby Bibs: Used to keep clothes clean during meal times. They can be made of cloth, or plastic for easy cleaning.
  • Sippy Cups: Aids transition from bottles to regular cups.
  • Blender or Food Processor: Used to make and puree baby food.

Remember: It’s necessary to sterilise all feeding equipment until the child is at least one year old. Equipment should always be clean and in good condition. Replace cracked bottles, spilt teats and other damaged items promptly to avoid injury or infection.
