Travelling Equipment (1-5 Years)

Pram or Pushchair Safety

  • Ensure it has British Safety Standards certification.
  • Check for a five-point safety harness that securely straps the child.
  • Choose a pram or pushchair with a firm, flat surface for your child to rest on.
  • Always apply the brakes when stationary to prevent it from rolling away.
  • Never hang bags or items on the handles as they can cause the pram or pushchair to tip over.

High Backed Booster Seats

  • Until your child reaches 15 months old, their car seat should be rear-facing.
  • Once over this age they should use a forward-facing car seat.
  • High backed booster seats should be used until they are 135cm tall (or 12 years old) according to British law.
  • Make sure the seat is fitted correctly with the belt running through all the right guides.
  • Always check for the E mark that shows the seat complies with European Safety Standards.

Car Travel General Safety

  • If a child is under 3 years of age, they must always be in a car seat when travelling, no exceptions.
  • If they are over 3 years old, they must also use a car seat unless their journey is an unexpected necessity, then they can use an adult seat belt.
  • Kids should always be seated in the rear seats of the car for safety reasons.

Bike Seat Safety

  • Bike seats should be fitted directly above the bike’s centre of gravity to ensure balance isn’t affected.
  • The child should wear a properly fitting helmet and be strapped into the seat with a secure harness.
  • Choose a bike seat with foot guards to prevent the child’s feet from getting caught in the bike’s wheel.

Travel Cot Safety

  • Make sure the cot complies with BS EN 716:2008+A1:2013 safety standard.
  • Do not use the travel cot as a playpen, it is not designed to withstand a toddler’s play routine.
  • Make sure the cot has a firm and flat mattress and fits snugly to avoid gaps which may lead to entrapment.
  • Always check the locks and latches are secure when assembled.
