Preparing for and providing Indian head massage treatments

Preparation

  • Understand the concept of Indian Head Massage - an ancient therapeutic practice used in India over 1,000 years meant to improve scalp and hair conditions, also promoting relaxation and wellness.
  • Familiarise yourself with the benefits of Indian Head Massage such as increased relaxation, improved blood circulation, relief from headaches and migraines, improved sleep, reduction in anxiety and so forth.
  • Learn about the different essential oils that can be used in Indian Head Massage. Each oil has its own benefits, such as aiding relaxation or improving hair growth.
  • Gain knowledge about contra-indications to the Indian Head Massage therapy. These are conditions where it’s not advisable to carry on with the treatment such as scalp infections, head lice, recent head or neck injury etc.

Client Consultation

  • Learn how to ensure the comfort and dignity of clients at all times.
  • Practice how to explain the process to your client, what they should expect, the oils that would be used, and the benefits they could gain from the treatment.
  • Master the skill of client assessment. Understand their needs, preferences and if they have any contra-indications.

Massage Techniques

  • Understand the procedure for Indian head massage including the initial relaxation techniques, various movements like kneading, tapping, rubbing, and so on.
  • Learn about different massage pressures and when to apply each one, being careful not to apply too much pressure causing discomfort to the client.
  • Understand how to maintain a proper posture during the massage, both for your comfort and the client’s safety.

Hygiene and Sanitation

  • Learn the importance of maintaining high standards of hygiene in all aspects of the treatment.
  • Understand the necessity of cleaning and sterilising equipment before and after each use.
  • Familiarise yourself with the procedures for safely handling and storing essential oils.

Aftercare Advice

  • Learn how to provide aftercare advice to your clients, such as avoiding excessive heat or strenuous activities post-treatment.
  • Understand the importance of advising clients about possible reactions following the treatment, for example, light-headedness due to relaxation, and what to do about it.
  • Gain knowledge of commonly recommended home-care products and activities, such as certain oils for at-home scalp massages.
