Preparing for and providing makeup application

Preparing for and providing makeup application

Understanding Client’s Needs

  • Initial Consultation: Establish your client’s requirements and expectations, including the occasion for which the makeup is being applied, their personal style, any skin sensitivities, and so on.
  • Client’s Comfort: Ensure your client is comfortable. The chair they’re sitting in should be the right height and the room should be at a pleasant temperature.

Skin Preparation

  • Skin Analysis: Identify the client’s skin type - dry, oily, combination or sensitive.
  • Cleansing: Use a cleanser suitable for the client’s skin type to remove any existing makeup and impurities.
  • Exfoliation: Apply a gentle scrub to remove dead skin cells and ensure a smooth canvas for makeup application.
  • Steaming: This opens the pores and allows deeper cleaning. However, this step is optional and may not be suitable for all skin types.
  • Moisturising: Apply a moisturiser suitable for the skin type. Allow this to absorb into the skin before starting makeup application.

Makeup Application

  • Primer: Apply primer to help makeup last longer and to provide a smooth base.
  • Foundation: Choose a foundation that matches the client’s skin tone and skin type. Use a brush or sponge for application.
  • Concealer: Apply under the eyes and on any blemishes or uneven skin tones. Blend well to avoid lines of demarcation.
  • Setting Powder: Dust setting powder over the face to set the base makeup and to prevent creasing.
  • Eyeshadow: Apply eyeshadow according to the agreed upon style. Typically start with a base colour, then add depth with darker shades.
  • Eyeliner and Mascara: Apply carefully for a defined look. Note that the technique will vary depending on the desired style.
  • Blush: Apply to the apples of the cheeks to add a healthy glow.
  • Lipstick or Lip-gloss: Ensure this complements the overall look.

Hygiene and Sanitisation

  • Clean Tools: Always use clean brushes, sponges, and other makeup application tools.
  • Product Expiry: Check the product expiration dates and never use outdated products.
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination: Never use the same brush or sponge on multiple clients without cleaning it thoroughly in between.

Post makeup Application Care

  • Setting Spray: Use a setting spray to ensure the makeup stays put for a long duration.
  • Advice on Makeup Removal: Explain to your client how to remove the makeup safely at the end of the day.
  • Skincare: Suggest a skincare routine that will help raise their skin’s health and help makeup look better in the future.

Skills Requirement

  • Creativity and Artistry: A good makeup artist is creative and can make their client look great.
  • Good Understanding of Colour Theory: A deep understanding of colour theory can help you pick the right shades for your client.
  • Attention to Detail: Minute details make a huge difference in the impact of the final look.
  • People Skills: Having great people skills can make your client feel more comfortable and satisfied with your service.

Recap and Review

  • Look Assessment: Asses the final look to ensure it meets agreed upon expectations, correct as needed.
  • Client’s Feedback: Ask for feedback; it’s crucial for your professional growth in the makeup field.
  • Aftercare Advice: Provide aftercare advice to your client, like touching up their makeup throughout the day or when to remove it. Offer skincare routine tips as per their skin type.
