Basic Manicure Techniques
Filing
- The first step of any manicure should be to shape the nails.
- Use a fine-grit nail file to smooth the edges of the nail and create the desired shape, whether square, rounded or oval.
- Always file in one direction to prevent nail damage.
Soaking
- Once nails are filed, the hands should be soaked in warm water to soften the cuticles.
- Add a gentle cleanser or essential oils to the water for added benefits.
Cuticle Care
- Apply a cuticle remover to soften and loosen cuticles.
- Gently push back the cuticles with a cuticle pusher or orange stick.
- Never cut the cuticles as this can cause injury or infection.
Exfoliation
- Remove any dead skin cells with a hand scrub.
- This helps to reveal softer, smoother skin.
Massage
- A hand and arm massage is a relaxing and beneficial part of a manicure.
- It promotes blood circulation and relaxation.
Applying Polish
- Apply a base coat first to protect the nail and improve the longevity of the polish.
- Then apply two layers of chosen colour followed by a top coat for extra shine.
Basic Pedicure Techniques
Soaking
- Feet are soaked in warm water with a bath salt or oil to soften skin and nails.
- Soak for approximately 10 minutes.
Removing Calluses and Rough Skin
- Use a foot file or scrub on dry, rough areas to remove dead skin.
- Areas particularly prone to hard skin include the heel and ball of the foot.
Exfoliation
- Once rough skin is removed, exfoliate the entire foot to remove dead skin cells.
- Use a scrub with a pumice stone or washcloth.
Cuticle Care & Nail Shaping
- Gently push back the cuticles and shape the nails, just as with a manicure.
- Again, never cut the cuticles.
Massage
- A foot and lower leg massage helps to relax the client and stimulate circulation.
- Use a hydrating lotion or cream for this massage.
Applying Polish
- Apply a base coat, two layers of colour, and a top coat, as with a manicure.
Remember that the aim is not only to beautify the hands and feet, but also to improve the skin’s condition and give clients a relaxing, enjoyable experience.
