Understanding the use and selection of various makeup products and tools
Foundation and Concealers
- Foundation is the base of the makeup and it creates an even, uniform colour. When selecting a foundation, you should match the colour to the skin tone as closely as possible.
- Concealer is used to mask dark circles, age spots and other small blemishes visible on the skin.
Powder, Bronzer, Blush, and Highlighter
- Setting powder is used to set the foundation and concealer, it prevents them from moving and minimise the appearance of pores and fine lines.
- Bronzer is applied to add warmth to the skin and enhance the natural structures of the face. It’s often used for contouring.
- Blush adds a rosy flush to the cheeks, giving the skin a healthy look.
- Highlighter is used to attract light, creating the illusion of brightness and height.
Eye Makeup
- Eyeshadow is used to add depth and dimension to the eyes. Choosing the right shades can enhance the eye colour.
- Eyeliner defines the eyes, and it can be used to create a variety of looks from a subtle enhancement to a dramatic statement.
- Mascara is used to lengthen and volumize the eyelashes, adding drama and intensity to the eyes.
Lip Makeup
- Lipstick, lip gloss, and lip liner are used to add structural definition and colour to the lips. Like with eyeshadow, the shades chosen can greatly impact the overall makeup look.
Makeup Brushes and Tools
- Beauty sponges blend foundation and concealer evenly across the face for a smooth finish. They can be used damp for a dewy look or dry for full coverage.
- Brushes for foundation, eyeshadow, blush and other makeup application have specific shapes and densities for optimal performance. It’s critical to understand which brush to use for each product.
- Eyelash curlers enhance the natural curl of the eyelashes, making them appear longer and more voluminous.
- Makeup palette spatulas are used for mixing makeup on a palette, keeping your makeup sanitary and aiding in custom colour creation.
Health and Safety
- Always clean brushes regularly to prevent bacteria buildup and skin irritation. Use a mild shampoo or a brush cleaner and allow brushes to dry with the bristles facing down to avoid water getting into the handle.
- Always perform patch tests with new products to check for allergic reactions. Apply a small amount of product behind the ear and leave for 24 hours.
- Products should be replaced regularly - mascara every 3 months, liquid foundation and concealer every 6-12 months, lipstick every 2 years. This details should be on the packaging of the product.
- Never share eye or lip products to avoid cross-contamination.
Practice and Customisation
- Regular practice will improve makeup application skills and increase understanding of which colours and techniques work best for different skin tones, face shapes and personal styles.
- Adapting techniques, tools and products to individual needs is key to successful makeup application - everyone is different, so consider all these factors when choosing what to use.
