Different types of waxes and their uses

Soft Wax

  • Soft wax, also known as strip wax, is commonly used because it adheres well to hair and is easy to apply.
  • It is a suitable choice for large areas like legs, arms, and back due to its effectiveness on larger surface areas.
  • To use soft wax, spread it thinly over the skin with a spatula in the direction of hair growth, then apply a cloth strip over it and quickly remove the strip in the opposite direction.
  • Beware of potential skin irritation as this wax adheres to both hair and skin, potentially causing discomfort during removal.

Hard Wax

  • Hard wax or stripless wax, is often used for sensitive areas due to its gentler nature.
  • It’s the preferred choice for underarms, bikini, and facial waxing as it adheres mainly to hair, rather than skin, reducing discomfort.
  • To apply hard wax, spread a thick layer of wax on the skin, allow it to harden, then remove it by lifting the edge and quickly pulling it off.
  • This type of wax is often preferred for its less irritating effect on the skin and its ability to remove shorter, more stubborn hairs.

Sugar Wax

  • Sugar wax, or sugaring, is a natural solution made of sugar, lemon, and hot water.
  • This type of waxing is hypoallergenic and biodegradable, making it a great option for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • In contrast to other waxing methods, sugar wax is typically applied against the direction of hair growth and removed in the same direction, causing less pull on the skin and reducing discomfort.
  • However, this technique requires a bit more skill and patience to master and may not be as effective on very coarse hair.

Remembering the features, uses, and advantages of these different types of waxes will be crucial in your beauty therapy practice. Your ability to select and utilise the appropriate wax based on various factors - such as the client’s skin sensitivity, the area of the body being waxed, and the type of hair - can greatly impact the effectiveness and comfort of the treatment.
