Nail Shaping
-
It’s important to establish the client’s desired nail shape before starting the manicure or pedicure. Common shapes include round, oval, square and squoval (a square with rounded edges).
-
Use a good quality nail file to shape the nails. Emery boards are commonly used, but glass or crystal files are gentler on the nails.
-
Always file in one direction only, moving the file from the side towards the centre of the nail. This helps to prevent splitting and damage.
-
When you’ve finished filing, use a nail brush to remove any dust or debris.
Cuticle Work
-
Cuticle work should always be carried out after soaking the feet or hands in warm water. This softens the skin, making it easier to work with.
-
Use a cuticle remover to help loosen the cuticles. Apply the remover to the base of each nail and wait a few minutes for it to take effect.
-
Gently push back the cuticles using a cuticle pusher or orange stick. Always work in small, circular movements and avoid applying too much pressure.
-
If there are any loose bits of skin (known as hangnails), carefully trim these away with cuticle nippers. Never pull on hangnails as this can cause injury to the client.
Polish Application
-
Always start with a base coat. This provides a smooth surface for the coloured polish and helps to prevent staining of the nails.
-
Apply the coloured polish in thin, even layers, starting from the base of the nail and working towards the tip.
-
Usually, you’ll need to apply two layers of coloured polish, but this can vary depending on the brand and shade of polish. Always wait for the first layer to dry before applying the next.
-
Finish with a top coat. This seals in the coloured polish and adds a glossy shine.
-
Be patient and allow each coat to dry fully for a professional result. Quick-drying sprays can be used to speed up the process.
-
Remember to clean up any errors or spills immediately with nail polish remover and a clean cotton swab.
Aftercare Advice
-
Clients should avoid excessive heat, chores or any activity that might ruin the polish for at least 12 hours after application.
-
Advise clients to use hand and nail cream regularly to keep their nails well moisturized.
-
Wearing gloves for chores can also help to protect the nails.
-
Regular manicures or pedicures can help to keep the nails in good condition. Recommend a return visit every four to six weeks.
-
Always remind clients that a balanced diet contributes to overall nail health.
