Socialising with Family and Friends

Socialising with Family and Friends

  • Vocabulary: Get familiar with a wide range of vocabulary related to the topic. Learn words and phrases about different types of relationships (like siblings, parents, friends, cousins etc), activities (such as going to the cinema, playing games, having meals), feelings and opinions.

  • Tenses: Ensure you have a good grasp of past, present and future tenses as these are essential for describing events or situations. Conjugate verbs accurately, particularly common ones like ‘ir’ (to go), ‘hacer’ (to do), ‘estar’ (to be) and ‘tener’ (to have).

  • Sentence Structure: Practise forming sentences that express complex ideas. You should be able to describe the nature of your relationship with family and friends, your shared interests, and events you have done or plan to do together.

  • Expressing Likes and Dislikes: You need to be able to express how much you enjoy spending time with family and friends. This includes being able to say why you like or dislike certain activities.

  • Descriptions: Learn how to describe people’s characteristics in terms of both physical appearance and personality. This includes understanding the gender and number agreement in Spanish adjectives.

  • Connectives: Use a variety of connectives to link your ideas and make your writing or speech flow more naturally. Some useful connectives could be ‘pero’ (but), ‘por lo tanto’ (therefore), ‘además’ (besides) and ‘sin embargo’ (however).

  • Asking Questions: Be aware of how to form questions in Spanish, as you may need to ask about family or social situations in a role-play or conversation.

  • Dialogues: Practise text or speaking dialogues about family and friends which can be in the form of an informal chat or a formal interview. Don’t forget to use a variety of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures.

  • Cultural References: Learn about social customs and traditions in Spanish-speaking countries, as this can provide interesting points for conversation and discussion, and shows an appreciation of the culture.

  • Practice: Take every opportunity to communicate in Spanish – both written and spoken – about your family and friends. This will build fluency and confidence in using the language.
