Section: Verbs in the Present Tense

SPANISH VERB ENDINGS:

  • There are three types of verbs in Spanish: -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.
  • Regular -ar verb endings in the present tense are:
    • I: -o
    • You (informal): -as
    • He/She/You (formal): -a
    • We: -amos
    • You (plural, informal): -áis
    • They/You (plural, formal): -an
  • Regular -er and -ir verb endings in the present tense are:
    • I: -o
    • You (informal): -es (-er), -es (-ir)
    • He/She/You (formal): -e (-er), -e (-ir)
    • We: -emos (-er), -imos (-ir)
    • You (plural, informal): -éis (-er), -ís (-ir)
    • They/You (plural, formal): -en (-er), -en (-ir)

IRREGULAR VERBS:

  • There are a number of irregular verbs in the present tense that fall outside these patterns.
  • Examples include “ser” (to be), “ir” (to go), “tener” (to have), and “hacer” (to do/make).
  • It’s crucial to memorise these exceptions.

STEM-CHANGING VERBS:

  • Some verbs change their stem in the present tense but keep regular endings.
  • These are often referred to as stem-changing or boot verbs.
  • For instance, “poder” (can/to be able to) changes to “puedo” in the first person singular.
  • You should practise these verbs well in order to remember them.

REFLEXIVE VERBS:

  • Reflexive verbs are also used in the present tense.
  • They describe actions done to oneself, such as “me llamo” (my name is/I call myself).
  • The reflexive pronoun matches the subject of the sentence.

PRESENT TENSE USAGE:

  • The present tense is used to describe current actions, descriptions or states, habits or daily routines, and general or universal truths.
  • It is also used for future arrangements.

Remember to pay attention to verb conjugation and the specific context where each tense should be used. Regular drills on this will enhance accuracy and fluency in verbal and written communication alike.
