School Subjects

  • Understanding a variety of school subjects in Spanish is vital. Here are some translations:
    • Mathematics / Maths is “matemáticas”
    • Science is “ciencias”
    • English is “inglés”
    • Art is “arte”
    • Physical education / PE is “educación física”
    • Geography is “geografía”
    • History is “historia”
    • Music is “música”
    • Drama is “drama”
    • French is “francés”
    • German is “alemán”
    • ICT / Computer Science is “informática”
  • You should also know how to express your favourite subject, which is “Mi asignatura favorita es… (My favourite subject is…)”.

  • To express the opposite, say “No soy bueno/a en… (I’m not good at…)”.

  • It’s also valuable to know how to talk about the number of subjects you’re doing - “Estoy estudiando … asignaturas (I am studying … subjects)”.

  • Be aware of the present tense verbs for studying and learning - “estudiar” and “aprender”, respectively. Take note of their conjugations for different subjects.

  • Finally, be prepared to describe your teachers and their teaching styles using adjectives. “Mi profesor de matemáticas es … (My maths teacher is…).”
