Film and TV

  • Familiarize yourself with Spanish vocabulary related to film and television. This includes basic words such as ‘película’ (film), ‘televisión’ (TV), ‘canal’ (channel), ‘programa’ (programme), ‘serie’ (series), ‘actor’ (actor), ‘actriz’ (actress), ‘director’ (director), ‘género’ (genre) and ‘subtitulos’ (subtitles).

  • Learn how to express your likes and dislikes in relation to film and TV. You should be able to use phrases such as ‘Me gusta’ (I like), ‘No me gusta’ (I don’t like), ‘Prefiero’ (I prefer) and ‘Odio’ (I hate).

  • Practice discussing different types of films and TV shows. This could include action, comedy, drama, romance, horror, thriller, fantasy, documentary or reality TV. For example, ‘Me gustan las películas de acción’ (I like action films) or ‘No me gustan los programas de realidad’ (I don’t like reality shows).

  • You should be able to describe and give opinions on specific films or TV shows that you have watched. You may have to talk about the plot, the characters, the setting and the issues raised.

  • Understand how to discuss the frequency with which you watch certain types of films or TV shows. This could involve using phrases such as ‘a menudo’ (often), ‘raramente’ (rarely), ‘nunca’ (never) or ‘siempre’ (always).

  • Practice talking about the people with whom you watch films or TV shows. You may use phrases such as ‘con mi familia’ (with my family), ‘con mis amigos’ (with my friends) or ‘solo’ (alone).

  • Be prepared to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of watching films at the cinema versus watching them at home.

  • Learn vocabulary related to the equipment and services used to watch films and TV. This could include ‘televisor’ (television set), ‘ordenador’ (computer), ‘teléfono móvil’ (mobile phone), ‘tableta’ (tablet) or ‘servicio de streaming’ (streaming service).

  • At advanced levels, you may need to discuss issues related to the film and television industry, such as representation, diversity or the impact of technology.

Remember always to practise speaking and writing in Spanish as much as possible to become comfortable using this vocabulary and these phrases.
