Problems in Society

Problems in Society

  • Understand different societal issues: These include poverty, crime, unemployment, corruption and discrimination. Make sure you know the appropriate Spanish vocabulary for all of these terms.

  • Explore the causes and effects of societal problems: Take into account economic, social and political factors. For instance, unemployment can be caused by an economic downturn (la recesión económica), and can lead to increasing poverty levels (el aumento de los niveles de pobreza).

  • Examine the issue of crime: Know how to express the types of crime (los tipos de crimen) such as burglary (el robo), assault (el asalto) or fraud (el fraude). Examine the possible reasons for crime, such as inequality (la desigualdad) or lack of education (la falta de educación).

  • Discuss poverty and its impact: Understand the implications of absolute poverty (la pobreza absoluta) versus relative poverty (la pobreza relativa). Know how to describe the cycle of poverty and its effect on people’s opportunities (las oportunidades de las personas).

  • Understand the discrimination problem: Be able to discuss different forms of discrimination, such as racial discrimination (la discriminación racial), age discrimination (la discriminación por edad), gender discrimination (la discriminación de género), and their impacts on society.

  • Investigate the issue of corruption: Review expressions to describe corruption such as political corruption (la corrupción política), bribery (el soborno), and embezzlement (la malversación).

  • Understand societal responses and solutions to these problems: For example, educational programmes (los programas educativos) can be used to tackle crime, while economic support (el apoyo económico) can help alleviate poverty.

  • Practice expressing your opinions on these issues in Spanish: You should be able to convey your thoughts and ideas clearly and coherently, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.

  • Apply grammatical aspects: Use a variety of tenses as appropriate when discussing these issues, such as the present (el presente), the preterite (el pretérito), and the imperfect (el imperfecto). Be able to handle complex grammatical forms like the subjunctive mood (el subjuntivo) if necessary.

  • Work on comprehension and conversational skills: Listen to Spanish news broadcasts or read Spanish newspapers to help understand the context of these societal problems. This can also help in the development of vocabulary and listening comprehension skills.
