The Home
-
Understand key vocabulary relating to the home, such as ‘la maison’ (house), ‘l’appartement’ (apartment), ‘la chambre’ (bedroom), ‘le salon’ (living room), ‘la cuisine’ (kitchen), ‘la salle de bain’ (bathroom).
-
Be capable in describing your home, including its size, type, location, and surrounding environment. For example, ‘J’habite dans une grande maison à la campagne’ (I live in a big house in the countryside).
-
Know how to express your opinion about your home, utilising expressions like ‘J’aime ma maison parce que…’ (I like my house because…) or ‘Je n’aime pas ma maison car…’ (I do not like my house because…).
-
Be able to discuss daily activities or chores at home, such as ‘Je fais mon lit tous les jours’ (I make my bed every day) or ‘Je dois aider à cuisiner le soir’ (I have to help cook in the evening).
-
Be familiar with prepositions of place to describe where things are in your house. For instance, ‘La télé est dans le salon’ (The TV is in the living room), ‘Mon lit est à côté de la fenêtre’ (My bed is next to the window).
-
Be able to describe your ideal home. Use conditional phrases like ‘Si je pouvais, j’aimerais…’ (If I could, I would like…). For example, ‘Si je pouvais, j’aimerais habiter une grande maison avec une piscine’ (If I could, I would like to live in a big house with a pool).
-
Use a variety of tenses to discuss past changes or future plans. For instance, ‘Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’habitais en ville’ (When I was younger, I lived in the city) or ‘L’année prochaine, j’espère déménager à Paris’ (Next year, I hope to move to Paris).
-
You should also be able to explain the pros and cons of living in a city or in the countryside using conjunctions like ‘mais’ (but), ‘parce que’ (doesn’t like the appartment). For example, ‘J’aime habiter en ville parce que c’est animé mais il y a beaucoup de pollution’ (I like living in the city because it’s lively but there’s a lot of pollution).

Remember to always use a broad range of vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and a variety of tenses to secure higher marks.
