The Nature of God

Oneness of God

  • Monotheism: Judaism is strictly monotheistic, which means that Jews believe there is only one God.
  • Shema: This is a key prayer in Judaism that affirms the oneness of God: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

Characteristics of God

  • Omnipotent: This term means ‘all-powerful.’ Jews believe that God has unlimited power.
  • Omniscient: This term means ‘all-knowing.’ Jews consider that God has knowledge of everything.
  • Omnibenevolent: This term refers to unlimited or infinite good will, kindness, or love. Jews believe that God is fundamentally kind and loving to his creation.
  • Merciful: Judaism hold a belief that God shows compassion or forgiveness towards humans, even when humans have sinned.

God as Creator

  • Creation: According to Judaism, God is the creator of the world and everything in it.
  • Book of Genesis: This part of the Torah describes the creation of the world by God.

God’s Covenant with the Jews

  • Covenant: Jews believe that God made a special agreement or covenant with them.
  • Abraham: According to Jewish tradition, God made a covenant with Abraham to make him the father of a great nation - the Jewish people.
  • Moses: Jews also believe that God made a covenant with Moses on Mount Sinai when the Ten Commandments were given.

Relationship between God and Humans

  • Free will: Jews believe that God gave humans the ability to choose their actions, known as free will.
  • Stewardship: Jews believe that God has given humans the responsibility of taking care of the world.
  • Prayer: Jews believe that they can communicate with God through prayer, building a relationship with Him.

God’s Role in the World

  • Benevolent Guide: Jews believe that God guides the world in a loving and caring way.
  • Justice: Jews believe in the concept of divine justice, where God rewards and punishes based on humans’ actions.

Faith and Belief in God

  • Indescribable Nature: The Jewish faith recognises that God’s true nature is beyond human understanding.
  • Belief and Trust: Despite their belief in God’s unfathomable nature, Jews place their absolute trust in God.
