Ways of Living
Ahimsa: Non-violence
- Ahimsa is a central tenet in Hinduism and represents non-violence towards all living beings.
- It fosters a respect for all forms of life, causing many Hindus to embrace vegetarianism.
- This principle influences a Hindu’s actions, encouraging peaceful, harmonious behaviour and discouraging harm or aggression.
Dharma: Righteous Living
- Dharma in Hinduism is the moral and ethical duty specific to an individual depending on their age, occupation, class, and gender.
- Dharma includes societal duties, such as maintaining harmonious family relationships and contributing positively to the community.
- Above all, it means living in a way that upholds truth, righteousness, and the cosmic order Rta.
Varnashrama Dharma
- The Varnashrama Dharma system classifies society into four varnas, or classes, each with its own set of duties.
- These are the Brahmin (priests and scholars), the Kshatriya (rulers and warriors), the Vaishya (merchants and traders), and the Shudra (labourers and servants).
- Alongside this, the Ashrama system divides life into four stages, Brahmacharya (student), Grihastha (householder), Vanaprastha (forest dweller), and Sanyasa (ascetic), each with associated duties to be fulfilled.
Purusharthas
- The Purusharthas, or objectives of human life as defined in Hindu scriptures, greatly influence a Hindu’s way of life.
- These are Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation).
- Fulfilling one’s Dharma, accumulating wealth in an ethical manner, seeking lawful pleasures, and ultimately striving for Moksha provides the framework for Hindu life.
Yoga and Meditation
- A key part of Hindu living is the practice of Yoga and Meditation.
- These practices promote self-discipline, control over the mind and body, and unity with the divine.
- They also contribute to holistic health and wellbeing, embodying a balanced approach to life.
Rituals and Worship
- Ritual practices, such as prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage are integral to Hindu life.
- Worship of deities (Bhakti) in a home shrine or a temple, offering food and gifts, and performing Puja are common practices.
- Participation in major Hindu festivals is a key way of living and demonstrates unity within the Hindu community.
