Life after Death

Core Beliefs in Islam

  • Tawheed: The oneness and unity of Allah. This monotheistic belief is fundamental in Islam. Every Muslim approach to faith and life springs from this belief.
  • Risalah: The belief in the prophethood. Muslims believe that Allah sent Prophets to every nation with guidance. The last Prophet being Muhammad.
  • Akhirah: The belief in life after death. Muslims believe in resurrection and final judgement.
  • Belief in the divine books: Muslims believe that Allah revealed His will through holy books including the Quran which is considered the final and most important revelation.
  • Angels: Muslims believe in angels as beings created by Allah from light who act as His messengers.

Prophethood in Islam

  • Muslims believe in 25 prophets mentioned in the Quran with Muhammad being the last of them.
  • Prophets are chosen by Allah and are human but free from sin.
  • The role of the prophets is to communicate the will of Allah and provide guidance to humanity.

Nature of Allah

  • Allah is omnipotent (all-powerful) and omniscient (all-knowing).
  • Allah is benevolent (all-loving) and merciful. His mercy in forgiving sins is emphasised in Islam.
  • Allah is transcendent - beyond human understanding, and immanent - close and directly involved with the world.

Angels in Islam

  • Angels are spiritual beings created by Allah.
  • They have different roles including delivering revelations from Allah to the Prophets.
  • Important angels include Gabriel who delivered the Quran to Muhammad and Michael who is responsible for provisions for creatures.

Books in Islam

  • The Quran: The final divine message revealed to Muhammad.
  • The Hadith: Sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad. They provide guidance for Muslims on daily life.
  • The Scrolls of Abraham, the Torah, and the Gospel are respected as they are seen as words of Allah but the Quran supersedes them all.

Eschatological Beliefs and Teachings

  • Day of Judgment: Muslims believe in a final accounting of deeds where the good will be rewarded and the evil punished.
  • Resurrection: There will be physical resurrection where bodies will be recreated for the Day of Judgment.
  • Heaven (Jannah) and Hell (Jahannam): Eternal dwellings for the righteous and unrighteous.

Life after Death

  • Muslims believe in immortality of the soul. At death, the soul is separated from the body and enters an intermediate state (Barzakh) until the Day of Judgement.
  • On the Day of Judgement, individuals will be held accountable for their actions during their lifetime.
  • Belief in life after death helps Muslims make sense of this life and provides motivation for moral conduct.
