Use of Aseptic Technique and Sterile Dressings

Use of Aseptic Technique and Sterile Dressings

Use of Aseptic Technique

  • Aseptic technique is a method designed to prevent contamination from microorganisms. It is often used in medical procedures.
  • In healthcare, the goal of using aseptic technique is to minimize or prevent the risk of introducing harmful germs into a person’s body during procedures such as surgery, inserting catheters, etc.
  • Aseptic techniques include actions such as handwashing, sterilising instruments, and using gowns, masks, and gloves appropriately.
  • The application of aseptic technique in any procedure is based on the key principle of ‘asepsis’, which means the absence of potentially harmful germs.
  • Healthcare professionals must be thoroughly trained in aseptic techniques to prevent healthcare-associated infections.
  • The steps of the aseptic technique must be carried out precisely to be effective. For example, not touching anything non-sterile while applying sterile techniques, and opening sterile packages in a way to avoid contamination.

Sterile Dressings

  • Sterile dressings are used to cover wounds to prevent contamination and infection. They are free from any microorganisms and provide a barrier to bacteria and other germs.
  • When applying a sterile dressing, it’s important to use aseptic technique to keep the wound and the area around it as clean as possible.
  • Never touch the part of the dressing that will be in contact with the wound.
  • When removing a sterile dressing from its packaging, only touch the edges of the dressing. If you touch the centre - which will cover the wound - it is no longer sterile.
  • While applying the dressing, do not allow it to come in contact with other non-sterile surfaces. A dropped dressing is considered contaminated and should not be used.
  • To maintain efficacy and sterility, dressings should be changed regularly and as often as instructed by a healthcare professional.
  • Sterile dressings need to be stored correctly in a cool, dry place to maintain sterility. The packaging should be checked before use to ensure it is sealed and has not been damaged.
