Hospital-Based Services

Hospital-Based Service

Acute Inpatient Services

  • Acute inpatient services provide intensive treatment for individuals in a serious mental health crisis that might include severe depression, psychosis, or suicidal feelings.
  • This care is under the supervision of trained health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, and social workers.
  • Treatment incorporates medication management, structured therapy sessions and may also include electroconvulsive therapy in extreme cases.

Forensic Psychiatry Services

  • Forensic psychiatry services are designated for individuals who have committed crimes as a result of their mental health conditions.
  • These services offer a range of treatments committed towards recovery of the individual as well as ensuring public safety.
  • They are typically provided in secure units within hospitals or in prison healthcare wings.

Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams (CRHTs)

  • CRHTs provide emergency support for people experiencing a mental health crisis, aiming to treat them in their own homes rather than in hospital where possible.
  • CRHTs involve a range of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and support workers.
  • They offer rapid assessment, acute home treatment, including both psychotherapy and medication, and help the individual to cope with the crisis.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

  • CAMHS are specialised NHS services providing assessment and treatment when children and young people have mental health conditions.
  • Teams usually consist of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and more.
  • CAMHS offers a range of interventions including psychoeducation, behaviour therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family therapy, dietetic advice, and medication if required.

Understanding the range of hospital-based services in mental health care helps to ensure the right treatment options are considered and tailored to individuals’ specific needs.
