Plans and elevation

A plan is a 2D drawing of a 3D object from a bird’s eye view.

It’s what a shape looks like from above.

The elevation of a shape is what the 3D shape looks like from side on.

The front of a 3D object is what it looks like in 2D from the front.

So for example this shape:
