SWOT Analysis and Action Plan

SWOT Analysis and Action Plan

Description of SWOT Analysis

  • A SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool used to identify and evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats in a business scenario.
  • The first two elements (Strengths and Weaknesses) refer to the internal factors of a business, which are controllable.
  • The last two elements (Opportunities and Threats) refer to the external factors, which are often uncontrollable but can be anticipated or planned for.

Application of SWOT Analysis in Recruitment and Selection

  • When applied to the recruitment and selection process, SWOT analysis can enable an organisation to capitalise on its Strengths, overcome its Weaknesses, take advantage of Opportunities, and mitigate Threats.
  • For example, a strength could be a well-known employer brand that attracts top talent. A weakness could be slow hiring processes that cause the organisation to lose high-quality candidates.
  • An opportunity could be the availability of new recruitment technologies to improve efficiency. A threat could be changes in labour market conditions that reduce the supply of certain skills.

Action Plan Post-SWOT Analysis

  • Once a SWOT analysis is complete, an action plan should be developed to strategically address each identified element.
  • An action plan includes specific steps, actions or initiatives designed to exploit strengths and opportunities, and address weaknesses and threats in the organisation’s recruitment and selection process.
  • For example, an action to overcome a slow hiring process might involve investing in new technology or redesigning the process to reduce the time to hire.

SWOT Analysis and Action Plan in Compliance with Legislation

  • As with all aspects of business, it’s important to ensure that the SWOT Analysis and resultant action plan are in compliance with relevant legislation, such as the Equality Act 2010 and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Thus, the actions identified should always facilitate fair, unbiased recruitment and selection, and ensure the safe handling of personal data.
