Types and Signs of Abuse and Neglect:
Physical Abuse:
- Frequent unexplained injuries or bruises.
 - Improper use of restraints or medication to control behaviour.
 - Frequent signs of being hit, slapped or physically mistreated.
 
Emotional Abuse:
- Changes in behaviour, such as becoming withdrawn or anxious.
 - Verbal aggression, yelling, or threats.
 - Unexplained fear of specific individuals or situations.
 
Sexual Abuse:
- Unexplained changes in behaviour.
 - Unwanted or inappropriate touching, or forcing someone into sexual activities.
 - Indicators such as bruising or bleeding in the genital area, sexually transmitted infections, or unwanted pregnancy.
 
Financial Abuse:
- Unexplained or sudden inability to pay bills.
 - Unusual or large withdrawals from bank.
 - Changes in property ownership or will without the individual’s consent.
 
Neglect:
- Signs of malnutrition like weight loss, or dehydration due to not having enough to eat or drink.
 - Unmet physical needs such as not being properly clothed, dirty living conditions, or lack of necessary medical aids.
 - Unmet medical needs such as missed appointments, unfilled prescriptions, or untreated medical conditions.
 
Discrimination Abuse:
- Verbal abuse based on race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or age.
 - Unequal treatment, exclusion or denial of access to opportunities or services.
 - Restrictive rules or views imposed on an individual based on their personal characteristics.
 
Institutional Abuse:
- Denial of individual’s rights within a care setting.
 - Ineffective care or unsuitable practises which cause harm or distress.
 - Lack of respect for individual’s privacy, dignity or autonomy.
 
Self-neglect:
- Ignoring medical or physical care needs.
 - Failure to maintain a safe environment for oneself.
 - Poor personal hygiene, nutrition or hydration.
