Health and Safety Requirements

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Understanding of “Health and Safety at Work Act” is paramount to protect oneself and others during any scientific procedure in health science.
  • It is crucial to have a clear knowledge of different safety symbols and signs. These are categorised into hazard symbols (biohazard, radiation, chemical) and safety signs (fire exit, first aid).
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): This involves using items such as gloves, lab coats, and safety goggles to protect oneself from any laboratory hazards.
  • Identification and control of hazards: This includes identifying potential hazards associated with a procedure or equipment, and taking measures to minimise the risk.
  • Safe use of laboratory equipment: It’s important to know how to use and maintain lab equipment properly to prevent injuries and accidents.
  • Compliance with good laboratory practise (GLP): This is a system of processes and conditions for planning, performing, recording, and reporting laboratory activities with consistency and reliability.
  • Adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs): Every laboratory has a set of detailed, written instructions to achieve uniformity and consistency in the performance of specific procedures.
  • Proper management of waste disposal: Knowing how to properly and safely dispose of chemical and biohazardous materials to avoid environmental hazard or infections.
  • Handling and storage of materials and specimens: This involves proper categorization, labelling, and storage of materials and samples to prevent misidentification and maintain their integrity.
  • First aid and emergency procedures: One has to know what to do in the case of an accident or a medical emergency. This includes knowledge of CPR, use of an AED, and how to use a first aid kit.
  • Regular risk assessment: Regular checks and evaluation of lab spaces and methods for possible risks are necessary to maintain safety.
  • Training and competence: Each individual should have the necessary training, skills and competence to carry out their duties safely and efficiently. Each person should also be aware of their responsibilities in ensuring safety in the workspace.
