Planning a multi-day expedition
Planning a multi-day expedition
Planning and Preparation
- Challenging and realistic goal setting: Every team member should be involved in the decision-making process, particularly when it comes to setting the goal for the expedition. Balance difficulty with achievability to maintain motivation and ensure a satisfying experience.
- Scheduling: Plan the day-by-day itinerary considering realistic distances for daily hikes, accounting for terrain, and rest stops.
- Permission and permits: Research the area you plan to visit in advance. Are there any permissions or permits needed from local or national authorities?
- Food and water supply: Organise food for every meal, including snacks. Plan for water refilling points along the route or consider bringing water filters or purification tablets if necessary.
Equipment
- Check and double-check: Make sure you have all necessary equipment, maps, first aid kit and clothing. This should be done well in advance and checked again on the day of departure.
- Weight distribution: Plan how equipment will be equally divided among the members of the group. Consider individual fitness and capability levels.
- Backup plan: Include a few items for survival in an emergency situation, such as a space blanket, whistle and torch.
Training
- Practice hikes: Arrange a few practice hikes to build physical stamina and prepare mentally.
- Equipment use: Make sure everyone knows how to use all equipment. For example, can everyone setup and dismantle a tent?
- First Aid: Everyone should have a basic knowledge of first aid, including how to deal with blisters, sprains, and hypothermia.
During the Expedition
- Daily briefings: Hold daily briefings in the morning to discuss the route and potential challenges ahead.
- Team dynamics: Ensure everyone is involved in decision-making and problems are dealt with quickly to maintain high morale.
- Regular check-ins: Use a predetermined contact method (mobile phone, satellite phone, radio) to check in with a home base or loved one regularly.
Post Expedition
- Celebration: Celebrate the successful completion of the expedition. This is an important part of recognising the effort required and enhancing cohesion within the team.
- Recovery: Make sure everyone takes time to rest and recover both physically and mentally after the expedition.
