Expressing Preferences in School Subjects

Understand how to express preferences and likes or dislikes about different school subjects in Spanish. For example, “Me gusta la física porque es fascinante” (I like physics because it is fascinating) or “No me gusta la historia porque es aburrida” (I do not like history because it is boring).

Be aware of the vocabulary of key school subjects in Spanish. Some of these include: ciencias (sciences), matemáticas (maths), inglés (English), arte (art), música (music), tecnología (technology), geografía (geography), historia (history), idiomas (languages), educación física (Physical Education), química (chemistry), biología (biology), física (physics), informática (computing), español (Spanish), francés (French), alemán (German), religión (religious studies), economía (economics), negocio (business studies) and drama.

Know how to discuss teachers’ and your own performance in different subjects. For example, “En matemáticas, estoy mejorando” (In maths, I am improving) or “Mi profesor de inglés es muy comprensivo” (My English teacher is very understanding).

Have the ability to discuss future plans regarding subject choices and possible university majors or career paths. For instance, “Quiero estudiar medicina en la universidad” (I want to study medicine at university) or “Voy a elegir las ciencias para mis opciones de A-level porque quiero ser una doctora” (I will choose the sciences for my A-level options because I want to be a doctor).

Practice describing your school day and what subjects you have on different days. An example: “Los lunes, tengo matemáticas, ciencias y música” (On Mondays, I have maths, science, and music).

Familiarise yourself with the relevant verbs related to studying. These can include estudiar (to study), aprender (to learn), enseñar (to teach), pasar (to pass), suspender (to fail), comprender (to understand) and mejorar (to improve).
