Critical Appreciation of Own Work: Choreography

  • Understand the fundamentals of choreography, including sequence and variety, rhythm and accents, space and direction, as well as dynamics and quality of movement.

  • Recognise the importance of original ideas in choreography. Interpret and present creative ideas inspired by stimuli like music, poetry, paintings, or social issues.

  • Recognise different styles, genres, and traditions of dance. Be able to incorporate these variants into your choreography accurately.

  • Acknowledge the use of mood and emotion in choreography. Understand how to effectively utilise these elements to forward a narrative or concept.

  • Analyse the use of props, costume, lighting, and stage setting and how these contribute to the overall impact of the piece. Evaluate how well these elements have been integrated into your choreography.

  • Evaluate your choreography with an understanding of, and consideration for, your target audience. How well does the piece communicate your intended narrative or concept to the viewer?

  • Understand the importance of safety and etiquette in choreography. Considerations should include the safety of dancers, appropriateness of costumes and props for the movements, and respect for the stage and other performers.

  • Reflection is key. Be able to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement in your choreography. This should include both aesthetic and technical points of consideration.

  • Recognize the need for rehearsal in bringing your vision to life. Understand how to make changes and adjustments during this process to improve the performance aspect of the choreography.

  • Understand the role of the choreographer in bringing everything together for a performance. Consider how to effectively manage time, people, and resources during the whole process.

  • Familiarise yourself with the use of technology in choreography. This includes understanding music editing and lighting design, and how these elements can enhance the performance.
