Infra: Form

Infra: Form

  • Binary structure: A type of form where there are two different sections (A and B). Each section may repeat throughout the piece but always in an AB order.
  • Ternary structure: A common structure in classical music that is also used in dance. This form has three sections, where the first and third are the same, and the middle section is different (ABA).
  • Rondo structure: A form with a recurring theme (A) interspersed with contrasting sections. For example, ABACA, ABACADA.
  • Narrative form: The use of a storyline or plot to shape the structure of the dance.

Infra: Choreographic Devices

These are strategies that can be used to generate or modify movement to create choreography:

  • Repetition: Repeating a movement phrase can create a sense of unity, motif or even boredom.
  • Retrograde: Performing a movement phrase in reverse order can make the dance more interesting or bring a new meaning to the theme.
  • Inversion: Changing the spatial orientation of a movement (e.g. turning it upside down or side to side).
  • Fragmentation: Breaking up a movement phrase into fragments or individual movements.

Infra: Stylistic Features

The unique characteristics of a piece that create its individual style:

  • Dynamic quality: The way the movement is performed.
  • Spatial awareness: This includes awareness of the body in space, and the space around the body, and how these impact movement.
  • Movement range: The range of movement that the body can achieve, depending on its flexibility, strength, and control.
  • Stylistic nuances: Subtle changes in style can create a unique movement or interpretation.

Infra: Performance Skills

The practical application of technique, style and expressive skills:

  • Technique: Dancers must have the appropriate technique to perform the movement accurately and consistently.
  • Expression: The ability to convey emotion or tell a story through movement.
  • Projection: The ability to reach out with your movements to connect with the audience.
  • Musicality: The dancer’s sensitivity to, or the expressive use of, the features of the accompanying music or rhythm in the dance
