The Garden of Love: Plot

The Garden of Love: Plot

  • The narrator visits a garden he knew in childhood but finds it changed.
  • He notices a “Chapel” built where flowers and shrubs used to grow, now surrounded by a “garden of thorns”.
  • The gates of the Chapel are shut, and “Thou shalt not” is written over the door.
  • The joyful scene of his memory is replaced by religion’s prohibitions and repression.
  • He sits down and weeps when he sees how the landscape of “joys & desires” is replaced by death and restriction.
