The Garden of Love: Plot

The narrator visits a garden he knew in childhood but finds it changed.
He notices a “Chapel” built where flowers and shrubs used to grow, now surrounded by a “garden of thorns”.
The gates of the Chapel are shut, and “Thou shalt not” is written over the door.
The joyful scene of his memory is replaced by religion’s prohibitions and repression.
He sits down and weeps when he sees how the landscape of “joys & desires” is replaced by death and restriction.
