Understanding Performance Conventions

Performance conventions are the established techniques or practices used in stage performances which help to create meaning.
These conventions can include methods of storytelling, presentation style or techniques such as the use of props, set, costumes, gestures or voice.

Narrative Conventions: These techniques, such as flashbacks or narration, help to structure the story.
Staging Conventions: Details such as the set and props layout, use of space, positioning of actors and lighting effects.
Character Conventions: Character portrayal through actions, gestures, vocal work or costume.

Application: Consider where and how performance conventions are used in the production. Are they present in the script, or have they been added in the performance to enhance the storytelling or highlight specific themes?
Function: Explore the function of these conventions. What do they contribute to the overall production? Are they used to provide dramatic impact, to convey a message or theme, or to engage the audience in a certain way?

Effectiveness: Evaluate the effectiveness of the performance conventions. Did they enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the production? Why or why not?
Consistency: Consider the consistency of the conventions throughout the performance. Did they enhance continuity or add variety?
Originality: Reflect on the originality of the conventions. Were they unique or traditional? Did this impact your enjoyment or understanding of the production?

Implementation: Reflect on how the actor embodies the conventions. Does their interpretation align with the overall vision for the production?
Adherence: Consider the actor’s adherence to convention. Do they stay true to the style, or do they manipulate it to create a fresh interpretation?
Technique and Skill: Evaluate the actor’s technique and ability to perform within the convention. Do they perform with energy and conviction? Do they show skill and mastery?

Audience Reaction: Reflect on how the audience reacted to the conventions. Did they enhance the audience’s understanding and engagement?
Audience Interpretation: Consider the audience’s interpretation of the conventions. Do they contribute a deeper meaning or simply add to the spectacle?
Receptive or Resistant Audience: Evaluate whether the audience seemed receptive or resistant to the use of convention. What might this indicate about their expectations or experiences?
