Plot: Dividing

Plot: Dividing

  • As the days pass, a divide begins to grow between the boys focused on maintaining the fire and shelter building (Ralph’s group), and the boys drawn to hunting and the primal pleasure of the kill (Jack’s group).
  • A “beast” is introduced when one of the littluns claims to have seen a snake-like beast in the jungle. This spectre of fear exacerbates the splintering amongst the group as some boys (primarily Ralph’s group) see it as fanciful, while others (Jack’s group), exploit the fear for their gain.
  • Simon, one of the the boys who is more understanding and spiritually aware of the boys, ventures into the forest and encounters the ‘Lord of the Flies’, a pig’s head on a stick, which ‘speaks’ to him. This represents the inherent evil within humans, further contributing to the overarching divide.
  • Jack declares his split from Ralph’s group and invites any other boys who want to join him and become hunters. Many boys abandon Ralph’s disciplined approach for the chaotic and violent thrill of Jack’s rule.
  • The dissent culminates with Simon’s death; at a feast hosted by Jack’s tribe, the boys partake in a savage dance and, caught up in a frenzy, they mistake Simon for the beast and murder him. This event marks a point of no return for the society established on the island.
