Plot: Surviving

Plot: Surviving

  • As their stay on the island elongates, their initial unity fractures and they split into two groups: Ralph’s group, who are concerned with maintaining the fire and get rescued, and Jack’s group, who become obsessed with hunting.
  • A beast is introduced. The little ones claim to have seen it. This develops fear among the boys, contributing to their fall into savagery.
  • Jack, who has been vying for control since their arrival on the island, uses the boys’ fear of the beast to pull most of them into his tribe, installing himself as chief.
  • Jack’s tribe begin to hunt more, savagery is clear in their war paint and the chant, ‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!’
  • Tragically, Simon, who had discovered the beast was merely a dead pilot, is killed in a frenzy by the boys during a ritualistic dance.
  • Under Jack’s command, two of his hunters, Roger and Maurice, raid Ralph’s camp and steal Piggy’s glasses to create a method of making fire.
  • Tensions further escalate between the two tribes. When Ralph, Piggy and their few remaining adherents go to Jack’s camp to demand the return of Piggy’s glasses, Piggy is killed by Roger.
  • As the last symbol of civilisation and moral order, Ralph is hunted through the jungle. Just as they are about to slay him, a naval officer arrives to rescue them.
  • At the moment of rescue, the island is engulfed in flames, symbolically destroying the vestiges of the boys’ previous rule of law and humanity.
  • With tears streaming down his face, Ralph mourns the loss of innocence on the island and the “end of innocence.”
