Plot: Pursuing

Plot: Pursuing

  • As time continues on the island, the boys develop a belief in a “beast” that they think is hiding on the island.
  • Simon, one of the group, suggests the beast they fear is actually within them — the evil inherent in all human beings. This is dismissed by the others.
  • Jack grows increasingly dissatisfied with Ralph’s leadership and breaks off to form his own tribe, which is primarily based on hunting, fear, and savage rites, including offering sacrifices to the ‘beast’.
  • Jack’s tribe eventually lures in the majority of the boys, leaving Ralph, Piggy, and a few others in the minority.
  • The division grows more violent when Jack’s tribe steals Piggy’s glasses to make fire.
  • The idea of the ‘beast’ takes physical form when a dead parachutist lands on the island. The boys mistake this for the beast, heightening their fear and granting further power to Jack’s tribe.
  • A meeting that Ralph calls in an attempt to restore order ends in chaos as fear overtakes everyone. Simon, in a fit of hallucination, communicates with the ‘Lord of the Flies’ (a pig’s head on a stick), a manifestation of the evil within all boys.
  • Simon tries to tell the boys that the ‘beast’ is their inherent human evil but is mistaken for the beast himself and killed in a savage frenzy led by Jack’s tribe.
  • As the plot thickens, the division between Ralph’s group and Jack’s tribe escalates to a point where it becomes an active hunt for Ralph.
